New Delhi:

In a surprising legal move that’s grabbing headlines, Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Friday (September 12, 2025) abruptly withdrew her petition from the Supreme Court where she had been challenging a defamation case linked to her comments during the 2020-21 farmers’ protest.

The case, which traces back to a controversial tweet by Kangana Ranaut involving a female protester, was dismissed from the apex court after the bench expressed unwillingness to entertain it. Faced with the top court’s cold reception, Ranaut’s legal team opted to pull the plug on the plea.

Who filed the defamation case?

The complaint was filed in January 2021 by Mahinder Kaur, a 73-year-old woman farmer from Bathinda district in Punjab, who had participated in the farmers’ movement. Kaur alleged that Kangana’s tweet falsely portrayed her as a paid protester, likening her to a woman from the Shaheen Bagh protests, sparking nationwide outrage at the time.

Kaur claimed the remarks were defamatory and insulting, stating that Ranaut’s tweet cast serious aspersions on her dignity and intent as a peaceful protester.

Ranaut’s counsel had earlier argued in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the summoning order from the Bathinda magistrate was legally flawed. However, when the Supreme Court bench — comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta — showed no inclination to support the plea, the legal team chose to exit the matter.

This move essentially leaves the defamation complaint active, meaning the legal battle continues for the actor-politician.

The now-repealed farm laws and the massive protests surrounding them had generated massive online discourse. Ranaut, known for her outspoken views, often clashed with critics on social media — but this particular retweet appears to have crossed a legal line.
