Srinagar:Twelve tourists were injured after being fired upon by militants in Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).
The attack took place in the picturesque Baisaran meadow, a popular destination accessible only by foot or horseback.
According to police officials, the firing began in the morning when tourists were visiting the meadow. Eyewitnesses said the assailants shot at the tourists from close range, causing panic and chaos.
Security forces launched a search operation in the area immediately after cordoning it off. A police spokesperson confirmed that the injured were airlifted by helicopter and also transported with the help of locals on horseback to medical facilities.
A doctor at Pahalgam hospital said that all 12 injured tourists were admitted and were currently in a stable condition.
A woman speaking to a news agency over phone said her husband sustained a gunshot wound to the head and appealed for urgent medical evacuation.
She said that seven others had also been injured in the incident. Soon after the incident, the police acknowledged that gunfire was heard near the tourist hotspot of Pahalgam.
Preliminary reports pointed toward a likely terrorist attack, though detailed information is awaited.
The attack comes months before the annual Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to commence on July 3. Pahalgam is one of the key routes for the pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir, the other being the Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
The region has been witnessing a significant rise in tourist footfall in recent past.
