Shimla: Himachal Pradesh’s tourism industry is witnessing an unexpected slump as tourists are choosing the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj over the scenic hill stations of the state.
Tourism stakeholders, who had high hopes for a busy season, are now left waiting for visitors who seem to have diverted their plans.
Gaurav Kanwar, a tour operator from Shimla, attributes the decline to the massive scale of the Maha Kumbh event. “The Uttar Pradesh government has presented the Maha Kumbh not just as a religious gathering but as a grand mega event. Pilgrims and tourists alike are heading to Prayagraj, leaving Himachal’s hotels and tourist spots unusually quiet,” he said.

Occupancy rates in Kangra plummet to alarming 4-5%

Hotel occupancy rates in Kangra have plummeted to an alarming 4-5%, which Gaurav describes as “virtually negligible”. He added that even regular family tourists, who traditionally prefer Himachal’s cooler climate and natural beauty, are now opting for the spiritual allure of the Maha Kumbh.
Aanchal Chauhan, who too is into travel business, believes that Himachal Pradesh has immense potential to attract tourists but lacks effective promotion.
“We have nature’s blessings with breathtaking landscapes and serene spots that can draw tourists from around the world. The government needs to strategise and showcase these destinations globally to revive the tourism sector,” she emphasised.

Stakeholders call for proactive steps to woo tourists

As the Maha Kumbh continues to attract crowds, Himachal’s tourism industry faces the challenge of reclaiming its allure amidst shifting travel trends.
Stakeholders urge the state government to take proactive steps, learning from Uttar Pradesh’s successful event management and marketing strategies, to put Himachal back on the global tourist map.
