Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals scheduled to clash in crucial tie
DHARAMSHALA: The scenic Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharamshala is set to host the 58th match of IPL 2025 on Thursday (May 8, 2025) evening, with Punjab Kings taking on Delhi Capitals in front of an expected crowd of 22,000 fans.
However, the much-anticipated encounter, crucial for both teams’ playoff hopes, is now under threat due to adverse weather conditions. The meteorological department has predicted rain and unsettled weather until May 8, casting doubt on the smooth conduct of the game.
This match marks the fifth time the two franchises will face off at the Dharamshala venue. Punjab, led by Shreyas Iyer, is aiming for a top spot in the points table, while Axar Patel’s Delhi Capitals are fighting to stay in the playoff race.
The match is scheduled to start at 7.30 pm, with the toss at 7 pm. Stadium gates will open for spectators at 4.30 pm.
Special prayers offered to rain deity Indrunag
Amid fears of a washout, the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association has turned to tradition. A special puja was held at the local deity Indrunag temple to seek divine intervention for clear skies.
This customary ritual has been part of Dharamshala’s cricketing culture, especially during the monsoon-prone season. Organisers remain optimistic, noting that the stadium’s advanced sub-air system can dry the ground within 15 to 20 minutes after rainfall, as demonstrated during the previous match.
Security tightened, fans ready despite concerns
With tensions high following India’s recent ‘Operation Sindoor’ and increased military alertness in northern states, including Himachal Pradesh, security has been intensified.
Around 1,200 police and Home Guard personnel will be deployed in and around the stadium. Drones will monitor crowd movement and ensure safety protocols are followed. Entry restrictions have been enforced, barring food items, coins, bottles and throwable objects.
Meanwhile, fans are hopeful for a full game. Punjab Kings conducted a rigorous practice session, mixing cricket drills with football and fitness routines. Delhi Capitals, however, skipped practice at the stadium, sparking curiosity.
