Over 1.55 crore eligible voters in Delhi will cast their votes on February 5 to elect representatives for the 70-member Assembly, the Election Commission announced on Tuesday.
The counting of votes is slated for February 8, marking the culmination of the electoral process.
The election will be conducted in a single phase, with 13,033 polling stations set up across the city. Among the total constituencies, 12 are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates. The last date for filing nominations is January 17, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until January 20.

Model code of conduct comes into effect

The announcement of the election schedule has triggered the enforcement of the model code of conduct, ensuring adherence to rules and maintaining a level playing field for all political parties.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasised the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and inclusive voting process.
Special arrangements are being made to accommodate elderly voters and those with disabilities. Additionally, voters aged 85 and above will have the option to cast their ballots from home, enhancing participation among senior citizens.
Over 2 lakh first-time voters are expected to participate in the upcoming elections, adding a fresh wave of enthusiasm to the democratic process.

Technology-driven voting process

The Election Commission is introducing technological advancements to enhance transparency and efficiency in the voting process. These measures aim to ensure a secure and seamless electoral experience for voters.
As political parties gear up for a fiercely contested election, this vote will decide the composition of the eighth Delhi Assembly. The Aam Aadmi Party has been ruling Delhi for the past 10 years. The election is expected to be a fierce contest between the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP, though the Congress too is in the contention.
