Himachal weather: Six days of rain, thunderstorms likely from today; avalanche halts traffic on Lahaul-Spiti road

Traffic movement on the Udaipur-Killar road in Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh came to a standstill late Wednesday (April 30, 2025) night after an avalanche struck near Daread Nala, cutting off the valley from the rest of the region.

Over a dozen vehicles, including two Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses, were stranded on either side of the blocked route.

Following the incident, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams and machinery were dispatched to the site to clear the snow and restore connectivity.

Rain, snow, thunderstorms expected across state

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a week-long spell of rain starting Thursday, with snowfall likely on higher altitudes.

A yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km per hour in several parts of the state, due to a fresh western disturbance affecting weather patterns.

Light rain is expected on Thursday in isolated areas of Kullu, Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla and Kinnaur districts. From May 2 to 7, Himachal is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall across various regions.

Shimla among areas affected by poor weather

In Shimla, overcast skies and intermittent showers were reported on Thursday. Similar weather is expected to persist for the next few days.

The authorities have advised travellers and residents in higher altitudes to exercise caution.
