Shimla: A horrifying case of domestic violence and *murder has come to light at Ghanperi village, located under the jurisdiction of the Shoghi police post in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, where a man allegedly murdered his wife and tried to destroy evidence by burying and partially burning her body in the courtyard of their home.
The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Gulshan. According to police officials, the accused, Totaram, who works as a security guard, has been arrested.
Crime discovered as neighbours alert victim’s family
The authorities discovered the crime after neighbours grew suspicious and alerted Gulshan’s family. Upon arriving at the house, her relatives found a freshly dug pit in the courtyard containing Gulshan’s half-burnt body.
The police were immediately informed and arrived at the scene to take possession of the body, which was then sent for autopsy. A forensic team also examined the site and collected evidence for further investigation.
Initial findings suggest that paint and wooden materials were used in an attempt to burn the body, presumably to hinder identification.
Family alleges victim was harassed over dowry
Totaram and Gulshan were married in 2020 and have a four-year-old son. Gulshan’s family alleges that she had been subjected to harassment over dowry demands since the early days of the marriage.
Her brother, Akshay, filed an official complaint with the police. He reported that their mother had tried to call Gulshan on May 14, but was unable to reach her. Concerned, the family travelled to Ghanperi where they found Totaram behaving suspiciously.
On inspection of the property, they found the disturbing scene in the yard. Akshay claims his sister was murdered before an attempt was made to destroy her remains.
In a strange turn, the accused himself had gone to the Shoghi police post claiming that his wife was missing. However, once police investigated the residence, the grim reality came to light.
A murder case has been registered under sections 103 (murder) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Boileauganj police station. The accused is expected to be presented before the court today for police remand. A postmortem of the deceased is underway.
