SHIMLA: The 43 daily wage employees who were dismissed from the National Law University at Ghandal in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh on January 1 staged a protest at the university gate on Monday (January 27, 2025).
The employees are fighting for the reinstatement of their jobs, alleging that neither the university management nor the local administration was willing to listen to their grievances.
The dismissed employees stated that they had been working in the university for the past four to six years in various fourth-class positions, including drivers, sanitation workers and hostel assistants.
However, they alleged, the management arbitrarily terminated their employment without any prior notice. To make matters worse, the university administration had issued an advertisement to hire new employees in their place, which they claimed was a blatant injustice.
Hemraj, one of the protesting employees, accused the university management of regularising their favoured candidates while abruptly terminating their services without any valid reason. He stated that the sudden job loss had made it extremely difficult for them to support their families.
The dismissed employees have approached Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh and local MLA Sanjay Awasthy with their concerns. However, they claim that the government had “not taken any steps to ensure justice for them”. The protesters have vowed to continue their sit-in demonstration until all employees were reinstated in their jobs.
