MANDI:

A precautionary alert has been issued for Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur districts of Himachal Pradesh after the water level at the Pandoh Dam rose significantly, prompting authorities to prepare for periodic opening of the spillway gates. Officials have appealed to the public to avoid venturing near the Beas riverbanks, warning that water levels could surge without notice.

According to Santosh Rana, Executive Engineer of the Electrical and Mechanical Division of BBMB at Pandoh, the water level has been rising steadily due to the administrative closure of the Pandoh-Baggi tunnel. With the tunnel shut, the inflow into the reservoir has increased rapidly, making controlled release of excess water essential for safety. “The spillway gates will be opened from time to time as required. People must remain cautious and stay away from the river,” he said.

Rana urged commuters, fishermen, villagers and those living or working along the river to exercise heightened vigilance. He warned that once the gates are opened, the Beas river could experience a sudden and sharp rise in water level. “Avoid unnecessary movement near the river. Even a brief surge can pose serious danger,” he added.

Farmers, cattle herders and travellers have also been advised not to take any risks during this period. Dam authorities confirmed that constant monitoring of water levels is underway and gate operations will be carried out immediately whenever required.

The Executive Engineer has also written to the Deputy Commissioners of Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur, requesting them to ensure necessary awareness measures and precautions in their respective districts.
Experts note that river flow in Himachal Pradesh generally dips during winter as freezing temperatures limit snowmelt. However, this year witnessed multiple surges in the Beas during the monsoon season, and the present rise at the dam has reinforced the need for public caution.

Authorities have once again appealed for full cooperation from the public to prevent any mishaps during this high-water phase.
