Second tragedy at Himachal’s top tech institute in 6 months
Hamirpur: A final-year dual-degree student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh was found dead in his hostel room, with authorities confirming it as a case of suicide. The deceased student hailed from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Upon receiving information, the police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. The NIT administration has also informed the student’s family about the unfortunate incident.

Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Bhagat Singh Thakur said that the police were conducting a thorough inquiry into the matter.

The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the campus, raising concerns over student well-being and mental health support systems. Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the student’s death are awaited, as authorities continue their investigation.

This is not the first such incident at NIT-Hamirpur. In October 2024, an MTech first-year student was found dead in his hostel room, suspected to have overdosed on drugs.

The incident led to the arrest of three NIT students and a fourth individual for allegedly supplying contraband substances on campus. Investigations revealed drug-related activities in hostels, prompting a crackdown by law enforcement agencies.

That case had raised serious questions about security and student safety, with the deceased student’s family holding the administration accountable for the presence of narcotics inside the institute.
