Nahan: In a stern move against ragging, seven second-year MBBS students of Dr. Y.S. Parmar Government Medical College in Nahan have been suspended for their involvement in a distressing ragging incident. The matter came to light on November 26, 2024, when the Anti-Ragging Committee received an anonymous complaint, prompting immediate action from the college authorities.

The investigation revealed that the accused students, from the 2023 MBBS batch, subjected their junior classmates to severe mental harassment. The juniors were allegedly forced to a private residence where they endured prolonged standing, abusive language, and other psychological tortures. While there were no physical injuries, the emotional trauma faced by the victims was undeniable.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Tuli confirmed the suspension, emphasizing the college’s zero-tolerance policy on ragging. “Such incidents damage the institution’s reputation and negatively impact the mental health of victims. Our goal is to maintain a safe, respectful learning environment for all students,” he stated.

In line with the investigation’s findings, the institution imposed strict penalties on the offenders. The suspended students were each fined ₹75,000 and banned from representing the college in any cultural or sports activities for one year. They will also remain suspended for three months.

The decision has sparked widespread support from the college’s junior students, many of whom have expressed relief at the prompt action. “This sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated,” said one student. The college has also reiterated its commitment to a ragging-free environment through regular awareness programs and strict monitoring.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilant anti-ragging measures across educational institutions in India. It highlights the importance of creating a campus culture where students feel safe and respected, ensuring that such acts of harassment are swiftly addressed to protect the well-being of all students.
