TNR INTERVIEW
Mandi has recently witnessed a surge in criminal activities, raising concerns about law and order. From attacks on government officials to the growing drug menace, residents are increasingly worried about their safety.
In an exclusive interview with Munish Sood of The Newz Radar, Mandi SP Sakshi Verma addresses these pressing issues, shedding light on police actions and strategies to tackle crime in the district.
Q: The attack on Mandi-Sadar SDM Om Kant Thakur by the mining mafia has shocked people. If even senior officials are not safe, what about the common citizens?
A: The law and order situation in Mandi is completely under control. This was an unfortunate but isolated incident and the police acted swiftly. We took immediate action, arresting the accused on the same day and registering an FIR. A thorough investigation is underway and all individuals involved have been named in the FIR. Strict action will be taken against those responsible.
Q: The case has taken a new turn with the accused’s wife filing a complaint against the SDM for misconduct. Are the police trying to protect someone?
A: The police work with complete impartiality. When the initial complaint was filed, we acted upon it immediately. Now, if another complaint has come up, due process will be followed and an investigation will be conducted accordingly. We do not favour anyone, and our duty is to ensure fair proceedings.
Q: Some reports suggest that a Congress leader is being shielded by shifting the blame onto the SDM. Are the police working under any political pressure?
A: Absolutely not. The police department is conducting its investigation without any external influence. The case is being handled with fairness and every action taken is based on facts and legal procedures.
Q: Some administrative officials claim that police tip-offs allow criminals to escape before raids. How true is this?
A: Such allegations are baseless unless supported by concrete evidence. The police force is a structured unit with clear protocols. If anyone has specific information about misconduct, they should come forward with proof. We have taken action in the past against officers found guilty of wrongdoing, but accusations must be backed by solid facts.
Q: Some police officials, including Manoj Thakur and Purushottam Sharma, have been accused of misconduct. How does the department handle such cases?
A: The law applies equally to everyone, including police personnel. Whenever allegations arise, we follow strict disciplinary procedures. Investigations are ongoing against these officers and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. No officer is above the law and our department enforces strict accountability.
Q: The rising drug problem in Mandi has become a major concern. Several youth have lost their lives. What action is the police taking?
A: The drug menace is a serious issue and we are committed to eradicating it. Increased cases indicate that enforcement efforts have also intensified. Arrests, crackdowns and preventive actions have been significantly increased. We urge the public to support law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities so we can take swift action.
Q: A teenager can easily find drug peddlers online, yet the police struggle to catch them. Why?
A: If such cases exist, they require proper investigation. The police act on solid evidence and intelligence, not rumours. Our focus is on dismantling entire drug networks rather than just catching low-level carriers. We conduct preventive detentions and raids based on credible information and legal protocols.
Q: It is said that educational institutions between Mandi and Sundernagar have become breeding grounds for drug trade. Have the police conducted raids there?
A: Yes, these institutions are on our radar. We have conducted raids in surrounding areas, but entering educational institutions without strong evidence is legally challenging. However, if credible information emerges, strict action will be taken.
Q: There are claims that some police personnel are colluding with drug peddlers?
A: The police department has a zero-tolerance policy against corruption. If any officer is found involved, immediate and strict disciplinary action will be taken. We have taken strong measures in the past and will continue to do so to maintain the integrity of the force.
