A stampede broke out at the Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj at 1.30 am on Wednesday (January 29, 2024), with 10-12 pilgrims feared dead and more than 50 injured.
The incident occurred at the Sangam ghat where a massive crowd had gathered for the auspicious Mauni Amavasya bath, the second ‘shahi snan’ of the festival. A rumour is learnt to have been the trigger, following which devotees, including men and women, fell to the ground and were trampled upon.
With lakhs of Himachal Pradesh residents also present in Prayagraj for the religious gathering, concerns over their safety have arisen. Authorities are working to identify victims and ascertain if any belong to the hill state.
Injured rushed to Swarooprani Hospital for treatment
The injured have been rushed to Swarooprani Hospital for treatment. An official said an unfounded rumour triggered the stampede. “More than 50 persons have sustained injuries. Rescue operations were swiftly carried out and ambulances transported the victims to hospitals,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a post on X, he conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
“The tragedy at Maha Kumbh is extremely painful. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. I have spoken to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and am closely monitoring the situation,” he stated.
Collapse of temporary toilet’s door stated to be trigger
Security has been intensified ahead of the Akhara procession and upcoming ‘shahi snan’. Officials have cleared Akhara routes, ensuring smooth movement for saints and devotees. The administration is making efforts to resume the holy bathing rituals without further disruptions.
A senior police officer said it was premature to confirm the exact death toll. It appeared that a temporary toilet’s door collapsed, which sparked panic, leading to the stampede, he said.
As per the latest reports, a staggering 3.61 crore devotees have bathed at the Sangam since Wednesday morning, while the total count since Tuesday has reached 19.94 crore. Authorities continue to manage the swelling crowd while ensuring medical aid and security for all pilgrims.
