Three-tier rating system based on 200-point cleanliness assessment
Mandi: To enhance hygiene standards and attract more tourists, home stay and hotel operators are being encouraged to participate in the Cleanliness Green Leaf Rating programme. The rating will be awarded based on a comprehensive 200-point evaluation system, divided into three categories: Leaf-One, Leaf-Three and Leaf-Five. This initiative aims to improve the overall experience for visitors while providing a transparent metric for cleanliness standards at tourist accommodations.
Evaluation to be led by Deputy Commissioner
Once the cleanliness evaluation is completed, the respective tourism units will be issued a Cleanliness Green Leaf Rating certificate by the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi. This rating, based on well-defined cleanliness standards, will assist tourists in making informed decisions about their stay, enhancing the appeal of home stays and hotels in the region.
How the Green Leaf Rating system works
The Block Development Officer (BDO) of Chauntra, Sarvan Kumar, explained that the Cleanliness Green Leaf Rating is designed to assess the fundamental cleanliness standards at tourism establishments. The system comprises three levels: Leaf-One, Leaf-Three, and Leaf-Five, depending on the score achieved in the evaluation.
The evaluation will be carried out by a committee led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and will focus on key aspects of hygiene. These include:
1. Solid Waste Management – Maximum of 80 points
2. Fecal Sludge Management – Maximum of 80 points
3. Greywater Management – Maximum of 40 points
This makes a total of 200 points, against which each tourism unit will be evaluated.

Scoring and rating levels
– Units scoring 100 to 130 points will be awarded the Green Leaf-One rating
– Units scoring 130 to 180 points will receive the Green Leaf-Three rating
– Units scoring above 180 points will be eligible for the highest level, the Green Leaf-Five rating
Following the evaluation, certificates will be issued to the qualifying units, which can be prominently displayed at their premises. These certificates will serve as a mark of credibility for tourists, offering insight into the cleanliness standards of the establishment.
