Shimla: RS Bali, Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC), addressed a press conference at Holiday Home on Tuesday despite being visibly unwell. “I’m a little unwell today, but this matter is important, so it was essential for me to address it,” said Bali, pausing occasionally to cough. In a reassuring tone, he added, “All is well in HPTDC.”
Bali emphasized that the HPTDC is functioning effectively and dismissed concerns regarding its financial health. Referring to a recent court case, he assured that the instructions issued by the Honorable High Court would be adhered to strictly, while expressing gratitude for the court’s consideration of the livelihoods of 1,673 families.
“No Properties to Be Closed”
“The court has not asked for the closure of any properties. This is a big relief,” Bali said, underscoring that HPTDC operations remain intact.
He also highlighted the record-breaking financial performance of the corporation under the Congress regime. “We achieved a turnover of ₹109 crores in the last financial year, crossing the ₹100 crore mark for the first time. Earlier turnovers ranged between ₹79 crores and ₹45 crores,” he said, attributing this success to effective management.
“Financial Burden Due to Past Decisions”
Bali pointed out that financial pressures on HPTDC stemmed from a pay scale revision implemented in 2016 under a government decision. “This revision, adopted by previous governments, required us to pay around ₹85 crores from our own resources. Gratuity amounts per employee were almost doubled,” he explained.
Renovations, Not Sales
Addressing speculation about selling or leasing out properties, Bali dismissed the idea categorically. “HPTDC is capable of generating profits and delivering excellent services. What we need are renovations, nothing else,” he stated firmly.
Reacting to CM Sukhu’s Statement
Bali also reacted to a statement made by Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu in an interview with The Tribune, in which the CM indicated openness to partnerships with private players for running defunct or loss-making government properties in the tourism sector.
Bali clarified that the interview was conducted before the court’s verdict, and circumstances had since changed.
“We are confident in HPTDC’s ability to succeed independently,” he asserted.
The press conference addressed public concerns while reinforcing HPTDC’s financial and operational stability.
