A one‑day training program for master trainers and Nasha Mukti Mitras was organized today under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at the district headquarters in Chamba. The event was jointly hosted by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Himachal Pradesh, and the District Administration, Chamba. Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repswal attended as the chief guest.
During the workshop, trainers Pankaj Pandit and Vijay Singh from Gunjan Organization for Community Development, Dharamshala shared practical insights on the growing menace of drug abuse, its harmful effects, and effective prevention strategies.
Representatives from 13 identified “red‑mark” local bodies in Chamba, along with panchayat secretaries, school principals, physical education teachers, health and police officials, and other stakeholders participated in the program.
Society’s Role in Reducing Demand
Addressing the gathering, DC Repswal emphasized that drug abuse is a serious social challenge affecting families directly and indirectly. He urged collective efforts from all sections of society, noting that while police and enforcement agencies are working to curb supply, reducing demand requires active community involvement.
He advised parents to maintain open communication with their children, seek counseling if needed, and ensure timely treatment to prevent youth from falling into addiction. Citing WHO, he stressed that drug addiction is a health issue and can be treated with proper support.
Positive Approach Over Punitive Actions
Repswal also cautioned against the trend of making and circulating videos of addicted youth on social media. He said such actions violate dignity and privacy, and instead, families and communities should adopt a positive approach—informing parents, engaging in dialogue, and facilitating treatment when necessary.
“A youth trapped in addiction is often a misguided individual. Rather than humiliation, they need understanding, counseling, and timely help,” he stated.
He called upon all Nasha Mukti Mitras to work with full commitment to eradicate the problem from its roots, while urging parents to remain vigilant and proactive in guiding their children.
The program was attended by DSP Baldev Dutt, District Welfare Officer Manjul Thakur, Deputy Director Education Vikas Mahajan, District Program Officer Dr. Karan Hiteshi, and other officials.
