DHARAMSHALA: The tragic and mysterious death of Chief Engineer Vimal Negi, who was employed with the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation, has raised many questions.

On March 10 (2025), the final moments of Chief Engineer Vimal Negi unfolded in a series of strange events — a visit to the hospital, a switch in taxis, a quiet lunch and an eerie silence — before he ultimately ended his life by jumping into the Sutlej.

Captured on CCTV standing in queue at hospital

Chief Engineer Vimal Negi arrived at his office in BCS in Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla on the morning of March 10, where he spent some time before heading to Tenzin Hospital in Panthaghati in a vehicle provided by the corporation.

Upon reaching the hospital, he took a prescription for a check-up with the medicine department. However, due to the heavy Monday crowd, Chief Engineer Vimal Negi stood in line for about 15-20 minutes but left without undergoing the examination.

CCTV footage from the hospital shows Chief Engineer Vimal Negi waiting in line with a visibly uneasy expression. After this, he left the hospital and instructed his driver to take him to Mall Road.

Taxi switch and silent journey to Bilaspur

After leaving Tenzin Hospital, Chief Engineer Vimal Negi was seen flagging down a taxi near Ripon Hospital on Circular Road, heading towards Bilaspur.

According to the driver, Chief Engineer Vimal Negi remained quiet throughout most of the journey. They stopped for a brief meal near Chamakhari Bridge and continued toward Bilaspur.

The driver reported that Chief Engineer Vimal Negi barely spoke during the ride and when they reached Nauni Mod, near the Four-Lane bifurcation in Bilaspur, he asked to get off. This would be the last location where Negi was seen on CCTV before his death.

On March 18, 2025, Vimal Negi’s body was discovered near the Bhakra Dam, close to Gah Ghodi in the Shahatlaai region of Bilaspur. The discovery raised more questions: How did Negi’s body end up in the Shahatlaai area after he left the taxi at Nauni Mod? Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are awaiting forensic reports and the post-mortem results to determine the cause and time of death.

This tragedy has left both the police and Negi’s family searching for answers.
