Solan:
Barely 24 hours after the d*eadly firing incident in Una, Himachal Pradesh witnessed yet another shock on Thursday (November 20, 2025) when gunshots rang out near a private university in Solan. A youth was seen brandishing a pistol and firing multiple rounds into the air on Sultanpur Road, triggering panic among students and locals.
A video of the incident has gone viral, showing the accused releasing more than eight to 10 rounds in quick succession. The sudden burst of gunfire sent Shoolini University students scrambling for safety as fear swept through the area.
Police nab accused while fleeing; tension grips locality
Eyewitnesses reported that several students ran in different directions to escape the chaos. The accused attempted to flee immediately after the firing, but quick action by the Solan police ensured he was captured before he could escape. The prompt response is believed to have prevented a potential tragedy.
The incident has left the locality tense, with heightened anxiety among students and residents living around the university campus.
Dispute between student groups preceded firing
Solan SP Gaurav Singh said that the shooting took place on a day when families of two student groups, who had clashed a few days earlier, had been called to the university for a discussion. It was during this time that the accused suddenly pulled out a pistol and fired into the air.
The police are now probing all angles, including whether the weapon was licensed or illegal. The pistol has been seized and sent for forensic testing, while the accused — reported to be a resident of Haryana — has been taken into custody for interrogation.
Back-to-back incidents spark concern over law and order
This fresh firing, coming hours after Wednesday night’s murder of a Youth Congress leader outside a hotel in Una, has intensified concerns about Himachal Pradesh’s deteriorating security situation. In the Una case, three individuals, including a former Youth Congress block president, were named as accused, while two injured youths were referred to Chandigarh for treatment.
With two major violent incidents occurring within hours of each other, questions are being raised about rising criminal activity and the growing vulnerability of educational and public spaces in the hill state. Authorities are on alert as investigations in both cases continue.
