Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is set to leave for Wayanad in Kerala on Tuesday after attending a cabinet meeting in Shimla.

The Chief Minister will be present in Wayanad on Wednesday during the filing of nomination papers by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi for the upcoming byelection to the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.

CM Sukhu is expected to leave Shimla this afternoon and will first head to Delhi before flying to Calicut later in the day. Priyanka Gandhi is contesting the byelection for the Wayanad seat, which fell vacant following the resignation of her brother, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had won from two seats and retained Rae Bareli. The byelection is seen as a significant political event, with Priyanka’s nomination adding further weight to the contest.

The Wayanad seat will see a multi-party contest, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielding Navya Haridas, a two-time councillor from Calicut, and the Communist Party of India (CPI) nominating veteran politician Satyan Mokeri, who has served as an MLA three times between 1987 and 2001.

The voting for the byelection is scheduled for November 13, with results to be announced on November 23.

After attending the nomination process, CM Sukhu is expected to return to Delhi on Wednesday evening, where he may hold discussions with the Congress high command.

It is anticipated that these discussions could focus on the pending appointments in various state boards and corporations, including the Himachal Pradesh Marketing Board and the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee of several districts. These key appointments are yet to be finalised and CM Sukhu is likely to push for a consensus with the party leadership before filling the posts.

Given his engagements, CM Sukhu will not be available for meetings with the public in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday and the day after.
