Himachal Pradesh Bans Public Display of Animal Trophies to Curb Illegal Wildlife Trade

Wildlife Department issues strict directives to protect endangered species and enforce Wildlife Protection Act, 1972

Shimla:
In a significant step towards strengthening wildlife conservation efforts, the Wildlife Wing of the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department has prohibited the public display of registered animal trophies and articles across the state. The move aims to discourage hunting and combat illegal wildlife trade by eliminating the glamorization of hunted wildlife.

According to an official office order issued by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, it was observed that individuals possessing legally registered wildlife trophies under Section 42 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 were showcasing them at public places, social events, institutions, commercial complexes, and even on social media platforms.

The order categorically states that such practices are in violation of the Act and could potentially encourage illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking.

National Guidelines Reinforced

The decision aligns with a previous advisory issued by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, which had also raised concerns regarding the public display of animal articles and trophies. The WCCB’s circular dated December 30, 2014, explicitly discouraged such acts due to their impact on wildlife conservation.

Violation to Attract Legal Action

The Forest Department has made it clear that any individual found displaying animal trophies publicly will face stringent legal action, which may include cancellation of registration and seizure of the animal articles or trophies. The authorities emphasized the importance of this measure in preserving biodiversity and curbing the illegal trade in wildlife parts.

Instructions to Forest Officials Across the State

The order has been circulated to all concerned officials including the Additional Chief Secretary (Forests), Director General of Police, and Divisional Forest Officers (Territorial and Wildlife). They have been directed to ensure strict implementation of the new guidelines and bring the order to the notice of all registered animal trophy holders within their jurisdictions.

This proactive step by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department is expected to significantly enhance wildlife protection efforts and act as a deterrent to those involved in or encouraging the illegal trade of animal parts.
