NEW DELHI: The political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over the functioning of Parliament has intensified, with former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, BJP national president J.P. Nadda and Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut mounting a direct attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, challenging him to be present in the Lok Sabha and face Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a debate.
The BJP leaders have sought to turn Rahul Gandhi’s own repeated claims against him. Gandhi has on several occasions accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah of being afraid to face him in Parliament and avoiding direct debate. The BJP now argues that with Amit Shah ready to respond to the Opposition’s concerns, Rahul Gandhi should demonstrate the same confidence on the floor of the House rather than, in the BJP’s words, “run away from the debate.”
In a Facebook post, Jairam Thakur directly challenged Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, saying that Amit Shah remains present in the House to respond to issues raised by the Opposition and would be there to answer them this time as well. Thakur questioned Rahul Gandhi’s record of being absent from the House when substantive debate takes place.
The attack comes amid the continuing deadlock in Parliament over the issue of police action against student protesters. The government has indicated its willingness to discuss the matter, while the Opposition has been demanding answers from the Home Minister. The standoff has repeatedly disrupted proceedings.
Nadda’s challenge adds pressure on Rahul Gandhi
J.P. Nadda has also challenged Rahul Gandhi to remain present in Parliament and participate in the debate instead of repeatedly changing the issue or disrupting proceedings.
The BJP’s argument is now centred around a simple political question: If Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly claimed that Modi and Amit Shah are afraid of facing him, why should he not be present in the Lok Sabha when Amit Shah is ready to answer?
The BJP has accused the Congress and the Opposition of demanding a debate when the government was unwilling to engage, but stepping back after the government agreed to discuss the matter.
Kangana Ranaut steps up attack
Kangana Ranaut has also sharpened the BJP’s attack on Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, accusing the Opposition of avoiding a substantive parliamentary debate despite the government’s readiness to respond.
She has questioned why the Opposition continues to disrupt proceedings when the Home Minister is prepared to address the issues being raised. Kangana has also targeted the Opposition over police action against students in Jharkhand, accusing Congress and its allies of maintaining double standards on student protests.
The BJP MP had earlier faced criticism over her description of protesting youngsters as “Generation Gutter”, a remark for which she subsequently offered clarification.
From “Modi-Shah are afraid of me” to “face Amit Shah”
The BJP is now seeking to make Rahul Gandhi’s earlier public statements the centrepiece of its counterattack.
For months, Gandhi has accused Modi and Shah of avoiding direct confrontation with him. The BJP’s latest challenge is therefore framed as a test of that claim: Amit Shah is ready to speak in the House—will Rahul Gandhi be there to listen and respond?
With Jairam Thakur, J.P. Nadda and Kangana Ranaut all targeting Rahul Gandhi on the issue, the Parliament standoff has acquired a larger political dimension, with the BJP attempting to portray the Congress leader as unwilling to face a direct parliamentary debate while the Opposition maintains that it is seeking accountability from the government.
The coming proceedings are therefore likely to witness a sharper face-off between the ruling NDA and the Opposition, with Rahul Gandhi and Amit Shah at the centre of the political confrontation.
