IIT-Mandi marked Gita Jayanti with Gitanushilanam 2024, a grand celebration centred around student participation in Bhagavad Gita-themed contests.
The event, organised by the Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Applications (IKSMHA) Centre, brought together more than 2,000 students from schools across Mandi district to celebrate the timeless teachings of the Gita.
The initiative aimed to inspire young minds by encouraging them to explore the Bhagavad Gita’s teachings through creative contests such as quiz competitions, shloka recitations, essay writing and art competitions. The contests, held over the past few weeks, culminated in a vibrant celebration on Gita Jayanti, with 700 students actively participating in the final day’s events.
Students from across region participate in event
Students from schools like Mind Tree School, Swami Vivekananda School, DAV-Ner Chowk, KV School and numerous government schools, including GSSS-Kamand, GSSS-Kathindi and GSSS-Baggi, showcased their talent and enthusiasm. The event highlighted how these young participants engaged deeply with the Bhagavad Gita, expressing their understanding of its profound teachings through various creative mediums.
The day’s activities began with the recitation of Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gita, followed by a lamp-lighting ceremony symbolising the pursuit of knowledge. A video presentation of Gitanushilanam 2024 showcased the journey of the contests, illustrating how thousands of children participated with zeal and creativity.
Performances such as yoga demonstrations, cultural dances and a shadow drama further added to the festive atmosphere.
IPS officer Soumya Sambasivan chief guest
IPS officer Soumya Sambasivan, the chief guest, praised the initiative for engaging students in such a meaningful celebration.
She emphasised the Bhagavad Gita’s relevance in shaping young minds, saying, “Contests like these inspire children to adopt the life-affirming values of Lord Krishna consciousness, steering them towards a positive and purposeful life.”
Quoting the scripture, she highlighted its message of unwavering faith in verse 9.31, “na me bhakta pranashyati” (My devotee is never lost), and the ultimate teaching of surrender in verse 18.66. She also lauded the unique contributions of women as celebrated in the Gita, encouraging students to embrace the scripture’s wisdom in their lives.
Recognising young talent
The event concluded with an awards ceremony, honouring the winners and participants for their outstanding contributions. The enthusiastic response from students highlighted the importance of blending culture and education to inspire future generations.
Gitanushilanam 2024 not only commemorated Gita Jayanti but also underscored the Bhagavad Gita’s enduring relevance for students, fostering a connection to India’s cultural and spiritual heritage. By engaging thousands of young minds, IIT-Mandi’s initiative showcased the transformative power of the Gita’s teachings in nurturing values of discipline, resilience and ethical leadership among the youth.
