At the inauguration of the International Mahashivratri Festival in Mandi on Saturday (March 9, 2024), Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu attacked his predecessor and BJP Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on the latter’s home front.

Sukhu alleged that Jai Ram as well as the BJP were afraid of facing the public. “That’s why just as a shepherd takes his sheep here and there, the rebel Congress MLAs who cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha election for the BJP are being taken from one place to another. From Panchkula in Haryana, they have now been shifted to a luxurious hotel in Uttarakhand’s Rishikesh,” he said.

The Chief Minister alleged that the electorate would never forgive those attempting to usurp power in a democratic setup by engaging in the reprehensible act of buying off MLAs. He stressed that their struggle was to safeguard democracy itself. “Our government narrowly escaped collapse during the passage of the budget in the Vidhan Sabha.

The six rebel Congress MLAs betrayed not their conscience but their integrity for monetary gain, leading to the loss of the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha election,” he said.

Asserting the stability of the Congress government, he emphasised its commitment to serving the people for a full five-year term. The CM rallied the public to raise their voices in support of the “people’s revolution”, sending a clear message to those attempting to undermine democracy. Among those present were Dharampur MLA Chander Shekhar and BJP Mandi Sadar MLA Anil Sharma, among others.

In the home district of former CM Jai Ram, CM Sukhu sharply criticised the BJP and asked Jai Ram to allow the nine MLAs to reconnect with their families. He emphasised the fundamental principle that no leader was above the people in a democracy where power ultimately resides with the electorate.
