Himachal Pradesh is currently experiencing snowfall in high-altitude areas, notably including Atal Tunnel Rohtang, amidst forecasts of heavy rain and snowfall issued by the Meteorological Centre in Shimla.
Intermittent rainfall has been reported since morning in various parts, including Shimla. The Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for heavy rain and snow on Friday (March 1, 2024) and Saturday in eight districts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Una, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla.
During the period, lower and central areas may also witness rain and hailstorms. Unfavourable weather conditions are expected to persist until March 3, with a yellow alert issued for that day. The western disturbance is anticipated to slightly weaken on March 4 and 5, although rain and snowfall may still occur in higher elevations during these days. The western disturbance is set to regain activity on March 6, leading to renewed precipitation in mountainous regions.
Given the Meteorological Department’s warning, residents of the state and tourists have been advised against venturing into high-altitude areas due to the risk of avalanches, particularly in Kullu, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. Following rain and snowfall, temperatures are expected to drop once again, following a minor increase observed over the past two days.
Temperature readings indicate a varied range across different regions: Shimla recorded a minimum of 8 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 10.1, Bhuntar 10.2, Dharamshala 6.4, Una 10.6, Nahan 10.9, Keylong -2.4, Solan 7.4, Manali 6.4, Kangra 11.5, Mandi 10.2, Chamba 11.8, Kufri 5.5 and Narkanda 4.3 degrees Celsius.
