HAROLI: The mortal remains of Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri’s wife Professor Simmi Agnihotri were consigned to flames at a solemn ceremony held at the family’s native Gondpur Jaichand village in Haroli subdivision of Una district on Saturday (February 10, 2024).
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was among the hundreds of mourners who attended the last rites.
The poignant procession saw Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri’s daughter Aastha bravely leading her mother’s bier to the cremation ground, accompanied by relatives, friends and political leaders. CM Sukhu too shouldered the bier.
Aastha and her father Mukesh Agnihotri performed the final rituals before bidding a tearful farewell to Simmi Agnihotri at the crematorium. Several senior leaders of the Congress also joined in to offer their condolences and support to the bereaved family.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Sukhu visited the ancestral village of Mukesh Agnihotri in Gondpur Jaichand where he extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. CM Sukhu personally participated in the last rites, symbolising solidarity and compassion in the face of loss. The circumstances leading to Simmi Agnihotri’s passing indicate that she was at her residence in Gondpur Jaichand when her health suddenly deteriorated, resulting in a drop in blood pressure.
Simmi Agnihotri, a professor in the Department of Personnel Administration at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, was known for her scholarly contributions and dedication to social and religious causes. Her published work, “Empowering Tribes, A Path to Sustainable Development,” reflects her commitment to advancing social justice and community welfare. The book was launched by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla three months ago.
