MANDI: The 1 km stretch on the Badi Gamanu-Mandi road near the Regional Hospital here has been in a state of neglect for a long period, causing inconvenience to the commuters.
The Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department and the Mandi Municipal Corporation bear responsibility for the road, the condition of which has worsened significantly following recent rains, resulting in large potholes.
The residents say that the road has been in a dire state for over a year without any repairs. The road connects to Badi, Bir, Baryara and other villages, including the residence of local MLA Anil Sharma, who lives only a km away.
Dheeraj Sharma, a local resident, said that the road’s deteriorated state makes it difficult for vehicles to cross. The absence of proper drainage aggravates the problem, with mud and water posing a problem to commuters. Numerous potholes not only increase the risk of accidents but also contribute to health issues, especially back pain for regular commuters and challenges for pregnant women.
Residents of Mutt village emphasised that the road’s neglect has led to frequent mishaps, urging the government to address the issue before the rainy season. They stressed the importance of a proper water drainage system to maintain the road.
Murari Lal, a regular commuter, highlighted the road’s continued deterioration despite numerous accidents. Potholes have expanded, damaging vehicles, and in some portions, they cover the entire road, posing a challenge for two-wheeler riders.
Suman Thakur, the ward member concerned, assured that she had brought the matter to the attention of the PWD authorities. She said the road stretch would be prioritised for repairs. Local MLA Anil Sharma, currently on holiday in Australia, could not be reached for comment.
