PALAMPUR: Monday (January 22, 2024) is anticipated to etch its name in the history books for Palampur in Kangra district and the entire state of Himachal Pradesh as the town boasts of a pivotal connection to the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, tracing its roots back 34 years.
In June 1989, the Rotary Bhawan in Palampur became the “birthplace” of the proposal for the construction of the Ram Temple as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened a three-day national working committee meeting from June 9 to 11.
In a swift two-minute decision, the proposal was approved during this historic meeting attended by prominent leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishan Advani, Vijayaraje Scindia and Shanta Kumar.
LK Advani presented the proposal with the backing of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Shanta Kumar, then the president of Himachal BJP, was entrusted with the crucial responsibility of the BJP national executive.
The secrecy surrounding the Ram temple proposal resulted in an unexpected surge of supporters during a BJP rally at Gandhi Ground, with the crowd extending beyond the police station—a rare sight in Palampur’s history. Vijayaraje Scindia, who attended the meeting, even visited Shanta Kumar’s residence to watch the Mahabharata serial during that time.
As the sun rose on Monday morning, the invitees to the consecration ceremony at the Ram Temple continued to pour into the temple town. Locals and devotees lined both sides of the road, fervently waving saffron flags and dancing to the melodious tunes of songs dedicated to Lord Ram.
Despite the biting cold, a palpable religious fervour engulfed Ayodhya, with the spirits of the attendees undeterred by the chilly weather. The holy town is brimming with anticipation to welcome Lord Ram, and the forthcoming consecration ceremony is set to be graced by the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The early morning arrivals included prominent figures such as RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Anupam Kher, Kailash Kher, Jubin Nautiyal, Prasson Joshi, Manoj Joshi, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Ravishankar Prasad and Anil Ambani. A star-studded lineup of dignitaries arrived in Ayodhya on Sunday, adding to the grandeur of the occasion.
Personalities such as Hema Malini, Kangana Ranaut, Sr Sri Ravishankar, Morari Bapu, Rajinikant, Pavan Kalyan, Madhur Bhandarkar, Subhash Ghai, Shefali Shah and Sonu Nigam joined the festivities, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity in anticipation of this historic moment in Ayodhya.
