A career dedicated to preserving Himachal Pradesh’s architectural identity while embracing contemporary design has earned senior architect Nand Lal Chandel yet another prestigious recognition. Chandel was recently honoured during the three-day International Film Festival held in Mandi for his exceptional contribution to architecture and for his sustained efforts in showcasing the state’s unique architectural heritage through modern and sustainable design.
Widely regarded as one of Himachal Pradesh’s most accomplished architects, Chandel has spent more than four decades shaping the state’s built environment. His work reflects a rare balance between development and tradition, ensuring that modern infrastructure retains the essence of Himachali architecture rather than replacing it.
Born in Bilaspur district on September 2, 1964, Chandel’s journey began with a Diploma in Architectural Assistantship from Government Polytechnic, Sundernagar. He later enhanced his professional qualifications through the Indian Institute of Architects, Mumbai, and the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. Even during his student years, his innovative designs attracted recognition in international architectural competitions, signalling the beginning of a distinguished career.
His professional journey took him through key government organisations, including the Public Works Department, Shimla Development Authority and the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board. After joining the Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department in 1996, he steadily rose to become Architect-in-Chief, leading the planning and execution of more than 3,000 public, institutional and residential projects across the state.
What distinguishes Chandel’s work is his consistent emphasis on preserving the character of the Himalayan region. Whether designing government buildings or public institutions, he has remained committed to incorporating traditional Himachali architectural elements with modern engineering practices, making his projects both culturally relevant and environmentally responsive.
Following his retirement from government service, Chandel continues to contribute to the profession as Principal Architect of V3 Design Studio, Mandi, where he mentors young professionals and promotes context-sensitive, sustainable architecture.
Apart from his professional achievements, he has served as Chairman of the Himachal Chapter of the Indian Institute of Architects and has been associated with several technical universities, expert panels and professional bodies, contributing to architectural education and policy development.
His distinguished career has earned him several prestigious honours, including the Pahari Nirman Shaili Sanrakshan Samman (2011) and the Eminent Engineering Personality Award (2023). The recognition at the Mandi International Film Festival adds another milestone to his long list of achievements.
Architectural experts believe Chandel’s work has played a significant role in redefining how development is viewed in the Himalayan region. By demonstrating that modern infrastructure can coexist with cultural heritage, he has left an enduring imprint on Himachal Pradesh’s architectural landscape and inspired a new generation of architects to build with both innovation and identity in mind.
