Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on Thursday flagged off a road safety awareness rally in Mandi, calling for strict adherence to traffic regulations and responsible driving practices across the state. The rally was organised by the Transport Department in coordination with the district administration as part of the International Mahashivratri Festival–2026.

The rally commenced from Seri Stage and traversed through Mangwai, Chakkar and Nerchowk before culminating at Dadour. Around 50 motorcycles and 25 cars participated in the event, with drivers maintaining prescribed speed limits and adhering to safety norms to demonstrate disciplined road conduct.

Addressing the gathering, the Speaker underscored that compliance with road safety rules is both a legal obligation and a civic duty. He commended the district administration and the Transport Department for undertaking a proactive initiative aimed at sensitising citizens during a major public festival.

He observed that vehicle ownership has significantly increased across the state, but awareness and compliance levels have not kept pace. “Such initiatives are essential to cultivate a culture of responsibility and caution among road users,” he said.

Alarming Road Accident Data

Referring to official data, the Speaker noted that Himachal Pradesh witnesses an average of nearly six road accidents every day. On average, about two fatalities and nine injuries are reported daily. He remarked that these figures represent real human loss and underline the urgency of preventive measures.

Authorities attribute the majority of accidents to overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, wrong-side driving, and the use of mobile phones while driving. Of particular concern is the fact that nearly 70 percent of accidents involve individuals between 18 and 45 years of age — the most economically productive segment of society.

Emphasis on Preventive Measures

The Speaker reiterated that sustained awareness campaigns are being conducted statewide to promote road safety. He urged citizens to strictly observe traffic laws, avoid driving under the influence, refrain from overspeeding, ensure regular vehicle maintenance, and maintain lane discipline, particularly on four-lane highways.

He also stressed the mandatory use of seat belts and helmets, avoidance of mobile phone usage while driving, use of low-beam headlights during night driving, and abstaining from driving when fatigued, stressed, or sleep-deprived.

Appealing to the public, he said that road safety must become a personal commitment for every citizen. “Safe driving is not optional; it is essential to protect lives and families,” he stated.

The event was attended by MLA Chandrashekhar, Vice Chairman of the Water Management Board Shashi Sharma, Chairman of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee Mandi Sanjeev Guleria, Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan, Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar, Regional Transport Officer Naveen Kumar, and other senior officials and dignitaries.
