Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Prof. Chandra Kumar today emphasized the crucial role of veterinarians in strengthening the rural economy, urging young professionals to serve the farming community with dedication and compassion.
Speaking as the chief guest at the oath-taking ceremony of the 35th batch of veterinary graduates at Dr. G.C. Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Prof. Kumar noted that the veterinary profession is highly challenging, as practitioners often diagnose and treat animals based solely on symptoms. He highlighted the trust livestock farmers place in veterinarians and called upon the graduates to pursue research-based work to support farmers, who he described as the backbone of the nation.
The minister assured action to increase stipends for veterinary students and underlined the importance of veterinarians in ensuring livestock health, food security, and farmer livelihoods. On the occasion, 59 newly qualified veterinarians formally entered the profession by taking the oath.
Earlier, Prof. Kumar also laid the foundation stone for a pedestrian corridor connecting three university buildings, to be constructed at a cost of approximately ₹15 lakh.

Palampur MLA Ashish Butail, present as a special guest, praised the university’s efforts in preparing competent veterinary professionals and raised issues faced by the institution. The Vice-Chancellor presented a report on the college’s academic, research, and extension achievements, congratulating the graduates and expressing confidence in their commitment to the profession.
The ceremony was attended by senior university officials, faculty members, students, parents, and staff from various departments.
