New Delhi: In response to escalating unrest, the Nepal Army has implemented strict nationwide security measures, effective from Wednesday (September 10, 2025) morning.
The measures include a prohibition on public movement and gatherings from early morning until 5 pm, followed by a curfew lasting until 6 am the next day. Authorities say the decision was taken to prevent potential violence disguised as public demonstrations.
Army warns of strict action against unlawful acts
The Army issued a public statement emphasising that any involvement in violent acts such as vandalism, arson or attacks on individuals and property would be prosecuted as criminal offenses.
The statement also warned of threats, including looting and even violent assaults, indicating that the security situation remains fragile. “In view of the nation’s current law and order concerns, these restrictive orders and the curfew have been deemed necessary,” the Army said.
Essential services, including emergency medical transportation, fire services, health personnel, and security officials, are exempt from the restrictions and will continue to operate as usual.
Protests persist despite PM’s resignation
The restrictive measures come just a day after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stepped down following intense public backlash. His resignation came hours after hundreds of young demonstrators, mainly from Gen Z, stormed the Prime Minister’s Office demanding accountability for the deaths of at least 19 people during Monday’s clashes with police.
The protests, initially triggered by allegations of corruption and a now-lifted government ban on social media, have since escalated. Demonstrators have reportedly set fire to key government buildings, including the Parliament, the President’s Office, the Prime Minister’s residence, and various political party headquarters, as well as private residences of senior leaders.
