Shimla: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 — both related to the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative — held a consultative meeting with Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in Shimla on Thursday (June 19, 2025).

The committee, chaired by Member of Parliament PP Choudhary, was warmly received by the Chief Minister, who welcomed the Chairperson and members with traditional Himachali caps and shawls.

During the meeting, the committee engaged in detailed discussions on the proposed framework of simultaneous elections across the country. Chief Minister Sukhu and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri shared the official stance and perspectives of the Himachal Pradesh government. Member of Parliament from Hamirpur, Anurag Thakur, also attended the session as a committee member.

In an informal interaction with the media following the meeting, Chief Minister Sukhu reiterated the Congress’ opposition to the proposed bill. However, he said that the state government had still offered certain suggestions to the committee in the interest of strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
“We have recommended that a provision be included for conducting by-elections within a year to ensure that democratic values are upheld,” he said.
