MANDI: In a deeply moving gesture of service to humanity, the Deh Daan Samiti of the Department of Anatomy, SLBS Government Medical College and Hospital (SLBSGMC&H), Mandi, received the donated body of the late Dr Chaman Lal Sharma, a 75-year-old retired Ayurvedic doctor and a registered body donor.
Dr Sharma, son of late Brij Lal Sharma and a resident of Gagal village in Mandi district, passed away on the night of May 19, 2025, around 10.15 pm. He had voluntarily registered for body donation on September 20, 2019, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to the service of others, a legacy he continued even in death.
His body was handed over to the department by his nephew, Mahesh Kumar, grandson Eeshan Sharma and other close relatives.

Receiving the body with deep gratitude were Dr Prabhjot Kaur, Head of the Anatomy Department, Dr Pradeep Kashyap, Assistant Professor, and other staff members. The department expressed their heartfelt admiration for the late doctor’s selfless act and described it as a powerful example of “living beyond death”, a gift that will contribute immensely to medical education and scientific research.
Gift to science, a message to society
The act of whole-body donation plays a vital role in the training of future doctors and advancement of medical science. With increasing demand for practical learning in anatomy and surgical training, body donation ensures that students and researchers have access to real human models, which no textbook or simulation can ever replace.
Dr Sharma’s decision to donate his body reflects not only a rare selflessness but also an enlightened understanding of the importance of medical education. It serves as a beacon of inspiration for the community, urging more individuals to step forward and pledge for body donation during their lifetime.
Encouraging voluntary participation
The Deh Daan Samiti of SLBSGMC&H appeals to the general public to consider body donation as a meaningful and enduring contribution to society. By making this choice, individuals can leave behind a legacy that benefits generations to come.
