The Himachal Pradesh government has finally broken its silence on the controversy surrounding the extended leave and transfer of IPS officer and former Baddi SP Ilma Afroz.
A government spokesperson clarified the state’s position, dispelling rumours and emphasising the administration’s commitment to merit-based governance.
The state government emphasised that Ilma Afroz’s appointment as Baddi SP was an out-of-turn decision, given her exceptional abilities. “Although it wasn’t her batch’s turn, she was given the responsibility of leading a crucial police district like Baddi 10 months ago,” the spokesperson stated. This, the spokesperson said, reflected the government’s respect for capable and hardworking officers.

Leave taken for ‘personal reasons’

The controversy erupted when SP Afroz extended her leave from November 7 to the end of the month, fuelling speculation about her absence. However, the government clarified that she had sought leave citing personal reasons, specifically her mother’s health. Before going on leave, Ilma Afroz met Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu along with her mother in Shimla and explained her situation.

Response to ex-CM Shanta Kumar’s letter

Former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar had written to CM Sukhu expressing concerns about the SP’s leave and its purported link to local political pressures. The government has responded to his letter, assuring him that the decision was free from external influence. The spokesperson urged the public not to believe misleading rumours circulating on social media, emphasising that the officer can resume duty at her discretion.

Mining mafia and political allegations

The controversy also brought allegations involving Congress Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary to the fore. While the MLA denied any involvement in the SP’s transfer, his previous clashes with her were highlighted, including a notice accusing the SP of surveillance and the issuance of challans against vehicles allegedly linked to his wife. Chaudhary, however, clarified that his vehicles were leased out, distancing himself from the charges.
The government reiterated its stand against blackmail or pressure, particularly concerning its crackdown on illegal mining. “This administration has acted firmly against the mining mafia without bias, showcasing its dedication to impartial governance,” the spokesperson asserted.
The state remains steadfast in its efforts to bring systemic changes for the benefit of the common people, with the Sukhu-led government pledging to uphold fairness and transparency.
