Anurag Singh Thakur, the Member of Parliament from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh and former Union Minister, has been elected as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) standing committee on UN Affairs.

This significant achievement was announced during the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) meeting held in Geneva on October 13. Thakur, who is in Switzerland from October 12 to 18 to represent India at various IPU meetings, was elected unopposed to this prestigious position.

The IPU is a global organisation of national parliaments that promotes democratic governance, cooperation and dialogue among parliamentarians worldwide. It complements inter-governmental relations by fostering understanding and collaboration on key international issues through the efforts of lawmakers.

During the APG meeting, Anurag’s nomination for the vacant seat on the Standing Committee on UN Affairs was proposed by the group’s chairperson. The members unanimously supported Anurag’s candidacy, paving the way for his election. The APG has forwarded its recommendation to the IPU, which will formally approve the appointment during its General Assembly meeting on October 17.

Upon his election, fellow parliamentarians present at the meeting congratulated Thakur, lauding his dedication and commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and international relations. The IPU, established over 130 years ago, is the world’s first multilateral political organization, promoting cooperation and dialogue among parliaments.

With 179 member parliaments and 13 associate members, the IPU works to strengthen democracies globally, fostering more inclusive, diverse, and gender-balanced parliamentary systems.

Anurag’s election to the standing committee on UN Affairs is a moment of pride for Himachal Pradesh and India, further cementing his reputation as an influential figure on the global parliamentary stage.
