Shimla: The upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh were draped in a fresh layer of snow on Thursday (February 20, 2025) morning as an intense western disturbance swept across the region.
High-altitude areas of Chamba, Kullu, Shimla, Mandi, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra and Sirmaur districts received heavy snowfall, transforming the areas into a winter wonderland.
Popular tourist destinations such as Manali, Atal Tunnel Rohtang, Pangi-Bharmour, Kufri, and Narkanda witnessed significant snowfall.
Weather shift leads to sharp drop in temperature

The sudden weather shift led to a sharp drop in temperatures. In the state capital, Shimla, intermittent rainfall persisted since last night, adding to the cold wave conditions.
The Meteorological Department had issued warnings of continued snowfall and rain throughout the day, urging people to take necessary precautions.
Snow accumulation disrupted vehicular movement in various parts of the state. Atal Tunnel Rohtang witnessed heavy snowfall accompanied by a snowstorm, making travel risky.
Roads to Kufri, Narkanda in Shimla district blocked
Roads leading to Kufri, Narkanda and Chopal’s Khidki region were blocked, stranding several vehicles. Authorities diverted Ramnagar-bound vehicles via Saij to avoid congestion.
In Chamba district, snowfall and rain brought traffic to a halt on at least ten key routes. Efforts by the Public Works Department are underway to clear snow-clogged roads and restore connectivity.
Meanwhile, farmers and orchardists are rejoicing, as the snowfall is expected to boost apple production.
The Atal Tunnel remains closed to tourists and only four-wheel-drive vehicles are being allowed up to Solang Nala. Authorities have urged travellers to exercise caution and check weather updates before planning their journeys.
