The weather in Himachal Pradesh has taken a turn as snowfall resumed in the higher reaches, particularly in Lahaul-Spiti district.
The Meteorological Department had forecast snowfall in upper regions and rainfall in lower areas for February 4 and the prediction proved accurate with Lahaul valley receiving heavy snow from Tuesday (February 4, 2025) morning.
The sudden shift in weather conditions has intensified the cold wave across the valley. In response, the Lahaul-Spiti Police issued an advisory for tourists to ensure safety amid the challenging conditions and prevent any accidents due to slippery roads.
Brings cheer to farmers and horticulturists
The snowfall has brought smiles to the faces of local farmers and horticulturists. January had witnessed only light snowfall, raising fears of water shortages during the summer if precipitation levels remain low. Adequate snowfall is crucial for sustaining water resources and ensuring a productive agricultural cycle.
Travel advisory issued to tourists, locals
Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Mayank Chaudhary has advised people to travel only if necessary, citing the risk of vehicles skidding on snow-covered roads.
“We have deployed police personnel at key points, and vehicular movement is currently allowed. However, if snowfall intensifies in the afternoon, we may suspend traffic to ensure public safety,” he stated.
Another western disturbance to hit region on Feb 6, 7
According to the Meteorological Department in Shimla, a western disturbance is active over the region, leading to adverse weather conditions until February 5.
Snowfall is expected in upper and mid-hill areas, while lower regions may experience rain. The weather is predicted to clear on February 6 and 7, with another round of snowfall likely on February 8 and 9.
