India Creates History: Wins Gold in Both Men’s and Women’s Sections at Chess Olympiad

India has once again proven its dominance in the world of chess. The country has made history by winning gold in both the men’s and women’s sections of the prestigious Chess Olympiad for the first time ever.

India Clinches Double Gold at 45th Chess Olympiad

The 45th Chess Olympiad, held in Budapest, concluded on Sunday with India’s men’s and women’s teams securing gold medals, marking a historic moment for Indian chess. In the 2022 Chess Olympiad held in India, both teams had won bronze, but this time, India took the top spot.

The men’s team, consisting of D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, and P. Harikrishna, dominated the open section by scoring 21 points. They outperformed 189 countries to claim the top position. In the final and 11th round, India defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5. Throughout the tournament, India won 10 out of 11 matches, with a draw against Uzbekistan. The silver medal went to the USA, while Uzbekistan secured the bronze.

Women’s Team Secures Gold in Thrilling Finish

India’s women’s team, consisting of Harika Dronavalli, R. Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Tania Sachdev, also made the country proud by winning gold with 19 points. In the final round, India defeated Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. The women’s team benefited from Kazakhstan’s draw with the USA, which allowed India to secure the gold medal. Kazakhstan won silver, while the USA settled for bronze.

Four Indian Players Win Individual Gold

Four Indian players delivered exceptional performances in individual categories, earning gold medals. In the open section, D. Gukesh won gold on board 1 and Arjun Erigaisi on board 3. In the women’s section, Divya Deshmukh won gold on board 3, while Vantika Agrawal clinched gold on board 4.

Men’s and Women’s Teams Achieve New Milestones

With this victory, Indian teams have now won a total of five medals at the Chess Olympiad. The men’s team previously won bronze in 2014 and 2022, but this is their first gold. Meanwhile, the women’s team, which won bronze in 2022, made history by winning gold this year.

India Retains Overall Trophy for Second Consecutive Time

India has also retained the overall champion trophy for the second consecutive time, after winning it in 2022. Russia holds the record for winning this trophy six times, followed by China with three titles and Ukraine with two.
