BCCI denies reports of withdrawal from Asia Cup amidst India-Pakistan tensions

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially refuted recent media reports suggesting India’s withdrawal from the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup and the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup. These tournaments, organised under the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), are significant events in the cricketing calendar.

On May 19, 2025, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the circulating rumours, stating that no such decision had been made by the Indian cricket board. “Since this morning, it has come to our notice about some news reports that the BCCI has decided not to participate in the Asia Cup and the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both of which are ACC events. Such news is devoid of any truth as till now. BCCI has not even discussed or taken any such steps regarding the ensuing ACC events, let alone writing anything to the ACC,” Saikia clarified.

The clarification comes amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, leading to speculations about India’s participation in ACC events, especially considering that the ACC is currently headed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. However, the BCCI emphasized that their current focus remains on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) and the upcoming England series for both men’s and women’s teams.

The Asia Cup, scheduled for September 2025, is a key tournament featuring top Asian cricketing nations. India, as the defending champions, are slated to host the event. The Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup is also an important platform for nurturing young talent in the region.

While geopolitical dynamics continue to influence sports diplomacy, the BCCI’s recent statement aims to quell uncertainties regarding India’s commitment to ACC tournaments. The board has assured that any decisions concerning participation in future events will be communicated through official channels.
