MANDI/HAMIRPUR (Munish Sood)
Former Union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur has hit back at Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu over his recent remarks in the Assembly regarding the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) action on a crusher owner.
Anurag Thakur dismissed allegations of his association with the businessman, calling them “baseless”.
Challenging critics, Anurag Thakur said, “Prove that I have any relationship with a businessman from Nadaun. If casting a vote establishes a relationship, then I share a relationship with the entire Himachal Pradesh.” He emphasised that those involved in business dealings should answer for themselves.
Criticism of EVM remarks
Speaking to the media on Friday, Anurag Thakur took a swipe at CM Sukhu, saying, “If Sukhu knows who is voting for whom through EVMs, it raises serious questions.” He also questioned the relevance of discussing supposed voter connections in such a context, calling it an attempt to divert attention.
Earlier this week, CM Sukhu said in the Assembly that he had no links with the businessman arrested by the ED, clarifying that the individual was merely a voter in his Assembly constituency and also a voter in Anurag Thakur’s Lok Sabha constituency. Sukhu’s remarks came after BJP leaders raised questions about his alleged connections to the businessman.
Hamirpur bypass and infrastructure concerns
When asked about the delay in constructing a four-lane road on the Hamirpur bypass, Anurag Thakur explained that the project faces challenges due to traffic standards and high land acquisition costs. “Building a four-lane road is hindered by these issues, but plans for a Ring Road in Hamirpur are progressing,” he said.
BJP organisational elections update
Anurag Thakur also addressed the BJP’s internal organisational elections, revealing that 85% of mandals had already completed the process. He assured that elections in the remaining mandals would be conducted soon.
Targeting the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi, Anurag Thakur said, “Crying and complaining have now become synonymous with Rahul Gandhi.” He criticised the Congress’ dismal performance, pointing out their failure to secure more than six seats in Jammu and Kashmir, losses in Haryana and their struggles in Maharashtra.
Anurag Thakur highlighted the internal rift within the Congress, stating that even the Aam Aadmi Party was demanding the Congress’ exclusion from the INDIA bloc. He questioned the leadership of the Nehru-Gandhi family, citing divisions within Congress in Parliament.
On the Congress’ allegations of police action against candidates protesting paper leaks, Anurag Thakur defended the government’s efforts. He said, “The Modi government has introduced a model law to curb paper leaks. State governments should adopt this legislation to ensure fair practices.”
