MANDI:

Politics in Mandi Sadar constituency has taken a dramatic turn after noted social worker Rajesh Kapoor publicly announced his decision to contest the next Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, challenging sitting MLA Anil Sharma on his own turf. The announcement has created a fresh wave of political buzz in the constituency long known as the stronghold of the Sukh Ram family.

Kapoor, who has been active in social work across the Tungal region, made the statement during a press conference in Mandi, saying that he was “ready to serve the people of Mandi Sadar in a larger and more effective capacity.” His declaration, however, was accompanied by sharp criticism and direct allegations against the sitting MLA.

In a strong attack, Rajesh Kapoor revealed that during one of their earlier exchanges, Anil Sharma had asked him what was lacking in the development of the area. Kapoor said, “I told him clearly that I have 15 points that need immediate attention. I said if you complete these works, I’ll carry your party flag myself and march ahead with you. But he never responded. These are the same works that he has failed to deliver on for years.”

Kapoor further alleged that he had raised serious issues about Kotli hospital, saying that patients there are often given just an injection and then referred to Mandi due to lack of proper medical facilities.
“They call Tungal their heart, but the reality is that those who claim to love Tungal have neglected it completely. The condition of basic health services tells the real story,” Kapoor added.

Brewing clash in Tungal

The tension between the two leaders has been building for months. Both operate heavily in the Tungal belt, leading to overlapping influence and growing rivalry. Their differences often spill into social media exchanges and both have publicly taken indirect dig at each other. The hostility deepened after a controversial remark made by Aashray Sharma, Anil Sharma’s son, during a public event, a clip of which went viral.

Challenger with a mission

Rajesh Kapoor, founder of the Panna Lal Raksha Memorial Charitable Trust, has earned respect for his sustained social initiatives in education, healthcare and community welfare. His decision to contest is seen as an effort to translate social service into political leadership.

“I have served the community for years,” Kapoor said. “But I now realise that true and lasting change is only possible through political authority. That’s why I’ve decided to enter this battle.”

For over three decades, the Mandi Sadar constituency has been considered a political fortress of the Sharma family. Anil Sharma, son of the late veteran leader Pandit Sukh Ram, has represented the area multiple times under different party banners and continues to wield significant influence.

However, Kapoor’s entry has changed the local political landscape. His growing support among youth and local residents, coupled with his open challenge to Sharma’s performance record, has introduced an element of uncertainty to what was once considered a safe seat.
