Second suspected chitta overdose death in Himachal capital Shimla in 2 days

Shimla: The capital city of Himachal Pradesh has reported its second suspected drug overdose death within a week. On Tuesday, a youth was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a room in the Khalini area.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the cause of death could be a chitta (heroin derivative) overdose. However, the exact reason would be confirmed after the post-mortem report, said officials.

A day earlier, a 39-year-old man was brought to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) by his family after his health deteriorated. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Following protocol, the hospital administration informed the police and a post-mortem was conducted in the presence of both police officials and family members. The body was later handed over to the relatives.

Autopsy reveals traces of chitta consumption

A doctor from IGMC, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the post-mortem report indicated traces of chitta consumption. Further forensic tests are being conducted for confirmation.

According to medical experts, an overdose of chitta can cause organ failure, which often leads to death.
The deceased was a resident of a suburban area of Shimla. His sudden demise has left his family devastated.

Third suspected overdose death in a week

This is the third suspected case of a chitta overdose in Shimla within a week. Earlier, a youth from Mandi was found unconscious inside an under-construction building near the Cemetery area in Sanjauli.

Preliminary reports had suggested that he died due to a drug overdose. In that case, the police registered a case of culpable homicide against drug peddlers and launched a search for the deceased’s companions, who allegedly fled the scene when his condition worsened.

With the rising number of drug-related deaths in Shimla, law enforcement agencies are under pressure to crack down on the drug trade and prevent further loss of lives.

The police have intensified their investigation and are tracking the network of suppliers involved in peddling chitta in the city.
