Shimla: A tragedy struck Kotkhai in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday as a woman and her daughter lost their lives after drowning in the Giri River.
The deceased have been identified as Kanta Sharma (47) and her daughter Mamta Sharma (30), residents of Raj Darbar village, under the jurisdiction of the Kotkhai post office.
According to the police, the incident occurred when Mamta, while washing clothes at the riverbank, slipped and fell into the water. Seeing Mamta drowning, her mother Kanta too jumped in to save her, but the strong current swept away both of them.
Local residents and police officials managed to pull them out of the river and rushed them to the Civil Hospital in Kotkhai. However, doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses reported that Mamta lost her balance on the slippery rocks and was swept away by the river’s swift flow. Kanta cried for help before jumping in, but she too drowned. Nearby villagers responded to the commotion and alerted the police. By the time help arrived, it was too late.
The incident occurred just 100 metres from the family’s home. Mamta was reportedly employed at HDFC Bank.
As news of the double drowning spread, Kanta’s husband and son tried to reach both women on their phones. When calls went unanswered, they rushed to the river, only to find police retrieving the bodies from the water.
Shimla’s acting SP Gaurav Singh confirmed the recovery of the bodies and stated that the postmortem has been conducted. The bodies have been handed over to the family for final rites.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing their grief on social media.
