Himachal dismisses 2 police constables involved in drug trafficking, were part of Shah chitta gang

SHIMLA: In a decisive move, the Himachal Pradesh government has dismissed two police constables found involved in drug trafficking.
Their links to a narcotics syndicate operating in the state have raised serious concerns within the administration and law enforcement.

This is the first time such strict action has been taken against government personnel in the state’s efforts to combat the drug menace.
The constables were linked to the Shah gang, a group involved in smuggling the synthetic drug chitta.

Zero tolerance policy towards drug menace

Once their involvement was confirmed, they were removed from active duty and asked to submit explanations.
Their responses were found unsatisfactory and termination orders were issued on the instructions of the Chief Minister’s office.

The action follows Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s repeated assurances, both in the Vidhan Sabha and public events, including during recent Himachal Day celebrations, that no government employee involved in drug trafficking would be spared.

CM Sukhu has announced a zero-tolerance policy and warned that anyone aiding the drug trade, regardless of rank, will face strict punishment.

Docs, teachers among 24 employees arrested in Shimla alone

The scale of the problem is evident. In Shimla district alone, 24 government employees, including doctors, teachers, revenue staff, forest guards and welfare officers, have been arrested for involvement in chitta smuggling.

Statewide, over 60 employees have been linked to drug-related activities, with disciplinary action recommended in each case.

To address the crisis, the government has adopted a multi-pronged strategy:

• A special task force (STF) has been formed to combat drug trafficking, with powers to seize properties acquired through drug money.
• A new anti-drug bill is in the works to close legal loopholes and strengthen enforcement.
• A statewide mapping exercise is identifying drug peddlers and users down to the panchayat level.
• A rehabilitation and de-addiction centre is being established in Sirmaur district to support recovery efforts.

The Himachal police have also launched ‘Mission Clean Bharosa’, targeting both drug suppliers and users through raids, awareness drives and intelligence-led operations.

The Chief Minister’s clear stance and swift action reflect a strong political commitment to tackling the drug crisis. As enforcement efforts continue, the message is clear: government employees who aid the drug trade will face severe consequences.
