Shimla:

Tension flared at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) on Thursday (October 10, 2025) morning after a violent clash broke out between student activists belonging to the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) near the university gate at Summerhill Chowk. Around half a dozen students reportedly sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation erupted when both student groups were conducting “gate welcome” events for newcomers. A verbal spat soon escalated into physical violence, with members of both sides attacking each other with kicks, punches and even sharp weapons. Panic prevailed in the area as students and staff rushed to the scene to separate the groups.

An ABVP leader alleged that around 25 SFI members launched a sudden attack on five ABVP workers using sharp weapons. “Three of our members suffered serious injuries in the assault. The SFI has always tried to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the campus and strict action should be taken against those responsible,” he said.

An SFI representative, however, blamed the ABVP, saying the saffron unit was the first to start the fight.
The police have been deployed in and around the campus to prevent further escalation and an investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and identify those involved in the violence.
