MANDI: Amid the rain disaster in Himachal Pradesh, the state is also witnessing an escalating political confrontation. Former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur launched a scathing attack on CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during a media interaction in Mandi on Thursday (July 3, 2025), calling him “the biggest tragedy for Himachal Pradesh”.
Jai Ram accused Sukhu of being insensitive and disconnected from the ground reality while the state battled an unprecedented crisis.
hu is pointless now. His mindset is so limited that he has turned the entire state into a spectacle. The kind of statements he makes and the way he behaves, the entire state is witnessing it unfold.” He said that not just the Chief Minister, but even his ministers have lost credibility, with their behaviour and statements being repeatedly exposed as irresponsible.
There’s communication failure at top, says Jai Ram
Jai Ram Thakur also highlighted a complete communication breakdown with the Chief Minister, stating, “I tried to call him six times this morning, but he didn’t answer once. When I called on the landline, his staff said, ‘the line to the top is not active’ — something I’ve never heard before as a former Chief Minister myself.”
In a sharp dig, Jai Ram said, “Sukhu is enjoying the position like it’s a joyride. He’s indulging in gimmick politics when he should be serious and dedicated. A Chief Minister must act with responsibility, not dramatics.”
He went on to say that he had advised Sukhu just a day earlier to prioritise restoring damaged roads instead of distributing rations via helicopters. “Distributing aid from helipads is not a solution. We need to ensure relief reaches the people on the ground.”
Ex-CM says he’s moving among people, not in a helicopter
Highlighting his own efforts, Jai Ram Thakur said, “I have been on the ground for two days, crossing rivers and damaged roads to reach affected people. I have risked my life to meet and console those in distress. I don’t need lessons or guidance from someone who hasn’t stepped out of his comfort zone.”
He said, “Instead of giving meaningless political statements, the Chief Minister should focus on helping the affected — ensure proper supply of water, food, roads, and basic facilities. This is the time for action, not publicity.”
