Protests erupt across Himachal over Pahalgam terror attack on tourists, markets closed in several places

Shimla: A wave of anger and grief swept through Himachal Pradesh following the brutal terrorist attack at Pahalgam in South Kashmir where indiscriminate gunfire by militants claimed the lives of 26 civilians, mostly tourists.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has sparked widespread condemnation and protests across the hill state.

In Bilaspur district, the town of Ghumarwin witnessed a complete market shutdown till noon as a mark of protest. Local traders, united in outrage, staged a protest march from Dakri Chowk to Gandhi Chowk, raising slogans against terrorism and demanding justice for the victims. Similar partial shutdowns were observed in many other parts.

Political Leaders, public figures join in condemnation

Reacting strongly to the attack, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu condemned the assault, calling it a “cowardly and inhumane act” that has no place in a civilized society.
He confirmed that security had been tightened along the state’s border with Jammu and Kashmir and police forces have been placed on high alert.

Expressing his solidarity, Sukhu offered prayers for the souls of the deceased and extended heartfelt condolences to their families. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones during this unimaginably painful time,” he said.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, during a BJP event in Kullu, observed a two-minute silence with party workers in the memory of the victims.

In his address, Jai Ram said, “This attack, where people were targeted based on their religion and identity, is one of the most shameful acts of terror. Whoever is behind this will not be spared.”

Candlelight vigils and calls for justice

Candlelight vigils have been planned in several parts to honour those who lost their lives in the attack. Candle tributes were also observed in various towns, with a major demonstration planned at CTO Chowk in Shimla later this evening.

The Himachal unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) also condemned the attack, urging the central government to take swift and decisive action against those responsible for this “barbaric and inexcusable” crime.
They also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured and expressed solidarity with grieving families.
