‘Our beloved Prof Simmi has left…’: How a midnight Facebook post by Himachal Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri left everybody shocked

SHIMLA: “’Hamari pyari professor Simmi Agnihotri hamara aur Aastha ka saath chod kar chali gayi (our beloved professor Simmi Agnihotri has left for her heavenly abode, leaving me and our daughter Aastha shattered),” wrote Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri in a post on Facebook as he broke the news of his wife’s demise on late Friday night (February 9, 2024).

Aastha Agnihotri is currently pursuing higher studies in the Netherlands. It is being said that Simmi was at her house in Gondpur Jaichand in Haroli sub-division of Una district when her blood pressure started decreasing. She was being rushed to the PGI-Chandigarh, but passed away midway near Kurali in Punjab.

Mukesh Agnihotri wasn’t home at the time of the incident and he was returning to his native place after attending a cabinet meeting during the day in Shimla.

Simmi Agnihotri was employed as a professor in the Department of Personnel Administration in Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. One of her books titled ‘Empowering Tribes, A Path to Sustainable Development’ was unveiled by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla about three months ago. She had keen interest in social and religious work.

According to information, her mortal remains would be kept at the family’s ancestral house Aastha Kunj in native Gondpur Jaichand village till 1 pm for people to pay their last respects. The last rites would be performed at the village crematorium at 2 pm.
