Dharamshala: In a high-profile operation coinciding with the 90th birthday celebrations of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out a raid early Friday (July 4, 2025) morning at the residence of a Chamba native in Dharamshala’s Ward Number 4 in McLeodganj in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.
The person is under investigation for alleged involvement in fraud, money laundering and possible connections to Khalistani networks.
The man, identified as Sunny, son of Ghindro Ram, currently resides in McLeodganj and operates a communication centre near the Dalai Lama’s temple. He is married to a Russian national, who has been living with him for several years.
According to official sources, Sunny is accused of defrauding people under the pretense of facilitating foreign travel. Additionally, the NIA is probing suspected financial transactions that may be linked to terror financing and support for Khalistani extremist groups, both within India and abroad.
The raid, which is still ongoing, involved the seizure of several electronic devices, including computer hard drives, mobile phones and financial documents, all of which have been sent for forensic analysis.
The local police officials stated that they were not informed in advance about the NIA’s actions. “We are looking into the details. It appears to be a sensitive case involving national security,” he said.
A senior officer from Dharamshala confirmed that the operation was part of a broader crackdown on terror funding and international links to banned Khalistani groups, especially amid tightened security for VVIPs attending the Dalai Lama’s milestone event.
