The election process for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Nurpur Municipal Council was successfully conducted on Friday under the chairmanship of SDM Arun Sharma. Councillor Neeti Mahajan was elected as Chairperson, while Councillor Sonia Soga secured the Vice-Chairperson position.
The council comprises nine elected councillors, with Congress-backed members finalizing the leadership during the meeting held at the Municipal Council office. After extensive deliberations, consensus was reached on Sonia Soga’s name for Vice-Chairperson, ending weeks of discussion among Congress-supported councillors.
The absence of former Congress MLA Ajay Mahajan from the ceremony sparked conversations among his supporters. BJP-backed councillors also did not attend the event. Notably, Congress MP Dr. Rajiv Bhardwaj and Nurpur MLA Ranveer Singh Nikka were not present, with BJP workers later remarking that protocol required their invitation.
Following the election, the newly elected Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson were felicitated with garlands by fellow councillors, dignitaries, and supporters. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh and former MLA Ajay Mahajan joined virtually via video call, extending congratulations and urging collective efforts for the development of the council area. HP State Civil Supplies Corporation Vice-Chairman Vishal Chambial was also present as a special guest.
In their address, Chairperson Neeti Mahajan and Vice-Chairperson Sonia Soga expressed gratitude to all councillors and supporters. They pledged to prioritize development projects, sanitation management, expansion of basic amenities, and resolution of public grievances. Both leaders assured that they would work inclusively with all councillors to ensure holistic progress of Nurpur town.
